Keynotes

Beyond show and tell: shaping continuous professional development with research-informed principles of practice

Jackie Flaherty
Head of Teaching and Learning, The Ogden Trust

Many of us make the journey from teacher to teacher developer and teacher educator. In this session we will consider the roles of teacher developers and educators, and the research surrounding the development of the knowledge base of a teacher.

Fostering metacognitive awareness in pre-service teachers

Katy Bloom
Senior Lecturer, School Learning and Teaching Lead, York St John University
Dr Jo Montgomery
Primary Science Consultant and Research Scientist, Dr Jo Science Solutions

Student teachers often commence ITE without a robust understanding of metacognitive strategies and their application in educational contexts, and are therefore ill-prepared to explicitly model and teach it, without receiving instruction and practise themselves. This talk will focus on a semi-longitudinal intervention to enhance metacognitive awareness in first-year ITE primary undergraduates, within a science context.

About the ASE Teacher Developers' Group

Group Mission: Leading Professional Development in Science Education

ASE Teacher Developers' Group is a community within the ASE, specifically for all those who support and develop teachers throughout their professional journey, from pre service training onwards. Membership of the group is open to all those involved in planning and delivering teacher education and CPD. The group’s activities support practitioners whose roles include:

· pre- and in-service teacher education;

· the design, co-ordination and facilitation of professional development;

· mentoring and coaching, whether in school, school groups or external;

· subject and departmental leadership.

Being part of the ASE Teacher Developers' community offers the opportunity for teacher developers to enhance their own expertise, knowledge and skills, through collaborating with a wide range of others fulfilling similar roles across the education landscape.

ASE's Teacher Developers' Group sits on the cutting edge of research, policy and practice within science education. In order to further our mission, we need people like you who have the drive and determination to improve current practice and to shape the future of scienc educators everywhere. To keep up-to-date with the group, update your membership profile to identify your interest.

If you have something you'd like to share with the group, whether through conference sessions, network meetings, blogs or other activities, please email conferences@ase.org.uk - we'd love to hear from you.
